If not fat, what then?
For years, condition and food experts have been decrying the high fat diet of the mean American. Entire campaigns aimed at helping the mean American lower their dietary fat intake were paid for by collective condition monies. These campaigns were thriving at helping Americans to reduce dietary fat and growth carbohydrate consumption. While these programs were successful, they were thriving at the wrong thing: helping America perform greater obesity than ever.
Fat
For sure, eating high amounts of fat which in turn contribute far more calories to your body than you expend, will make you gain weight over time. However, it’s not the fat that you’re eating which turns to fat, instead, it’s the carbohydrates. When you analyze the typical high fat diet over the years, it contains also high amounts of carbohydrates. As we switched from fats to carbohydrates as the “experts” asked us to, we got even fatter.
So, we have two groups of people, the high fat eaters, who tend to be overweight and we have the high carbohydrate eaters who are even heavier. So, how did we get into this predicament?
The Pancreas – Friend or Foe?
Understanding this starts with comprehension a puny about the pancreas. The pancreas is an organ which secretes a very prominent hormone called insulin. We’ve all heard of it, it’s the hormone that when you don’t have enough you get diagnosed with diabetes. However, it’s prominent to know the two main functions of insulin and then a puny about how our bodies furnish energy.
What Does Insulin Do?
The two main functions of insulin are: 1. To allow blood sugar to move from our blood stream into our tissues like muscles. 2. To stimulate the warehouse of fat from excess blood sugar. These are two very prominent functions which can go out of control.
Our bodies have 3 sources of energy: fat, protein, and carbohydrate. However, our bodiy prefers to use sugar first due to the fact it is much quicker and less complicated biochemically. It is easier for our body to furnish energy from sugar than fat. Therefore, our body will burn and we will live on our stored and blood sugar as we live our days. While our body is burning sugar, all of the fat from our high fat diets are being stored…hence we get fatter and fatter as a nation. This also explains why those who eat high carbohydrate diets still get fat – it’s because their bodies are following this same pattern of burning sugar first, and then converting anything is leftover into fat.
So what’s the problem? And, how do we fix it?
So, the question is not the fat we eat, or the protein we eat, it’s the estimate of sugar we eat. And, the extremely processed forms of sugar such as high fructose corn syrup are even worse. When we eat thse, our bodies burn and burn what we’re eating, but it’s the sugar it’s burning and since we’re a lot of it, we never burn down to the point where we start using fat as a former source.
It’s potential for person to eat a very high fat diet with very low carbohydrates and not get fat and in some cases, lose weight. One great example of a diet such as that is the Atkins Diet. It is renouned for allowing you to eat lots of meat (high protein) and still lose weight. Well, we all know that high protein foods like beef, chicken, fish, also contain high amounts of fat. So, the Atkins Diet is also a high fat diet – yet many still lose weight. As with all weight loss programs, the key is not the losing of weight, but either or not you can keep it off.
As a corollary of eating lots of sugars (carbohydrates) the pancreas becomes quite adept at producing insulin very swiftly (a spike). This spike of insulin into the bloodstream causes the blood sugar to enter the tissues and creates a state of reactive hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). You feel this as a sense of hunger, and what is normally around is an additional one dose of high carbohydrate, sugary food. This causes the same spike of insulin and the cycle repeats with us eating more and more extremely refined carbohydrates thus giving us fullness of extra to store as fat.
The bottom line cause.
So, the real cause of obesity is excess carbohydrate consumption, especially extremely refined carbohydrates. And, unfortunately, our food contribute is saturated with inexpexpensive refined carbohydrates like high fructose corn syrup. It’s found in roughly all packaged foods, in soft drinks, all candy bars, many breads, and all juices.
So, the fix for this cycle we have inadvertently entered is to reset the pancreas and get it functioning right instead of spiking insulin. And, get ourselves on a diet which lowers our carbohydrates (not eliminate them) and give ourselves the permissible estimate of protein and fat for health. The body will burn through the low carbohydrate intake and start to burn fat — and that’s when you’ll see the inches just melt away.
